All She Wrote
Six60
May 2021 was a very specific kind of moment in New Zealand. While much of the world was still locked down, Aotearoa was hosting concerts again. Real ones, with crowds. Six60's Six60 Saturdays tour had become something of a symbol of that: the band playing to tens of thousands of people at outdoor venues across the country while international artists could only watch from a distance.
"All She Wrote" was born directly out of that tour. The band first wrote the chords on an old guitar with only three strings remaining. It was debuted live before it was even released, premiered at the first Six60 Saturdays show in January 2021, then released just before the tour's final performance in Hamilton. The lyrics, inspired by acceptance, were right for the moment.
The music video is an homage to OMC's "How Bizarre" (1995), featuring cameos from Dan Carter, Joseph Parker, Chlöe Swarbrick, Dave Dobbyn, and Mike McRoberts among others. It's a very Aotearoa cast, the kind of video that only makes sense if you already know the country, but lands perfectly if you do.
The song hit #1 and was nominated for Single of the Year at the Aotearoa Music Awards. Four times platinum. Another entry in a catalogue that by 2021 had made Six60 one of the most consistent chart forces the country had ever produced.
How we choose the #1
Each entry represents the song with the most weeks at number one on the New Zealand charts during that calendar month. Where two songs share the same number of weeks, we apply a tiebreaker based on peak chart position, then chart run longevity.
Entries marked as inferred indicate months where primary RIANZ/RMNZ chart data is unavailable. These are reconstructed from contemporary music press, radio playlists, and secondary archival sources, and are clearly labelled.
