Before You Leave

Six60

#1 for 3 weeks this month

'Before You Leave' is a pop single by Six60, released on 19 August 2022 through Massive/Universal as the lead single from their album Castle St. It reached #1 on the Official NZ Top 20 Aotearoa Singles Chart, where it spent 13 weeks, a run that coincided with one of the most dominant periods any NZ act has enjoyed on the chart. In the week of 18–24 November 2022, Six60 occupied six of the Top 20 positions simultaneously, with 'Before You Leave' at #1, 'Don't Forget Your Roots' at #3, 'Someone To Be Around' at #7, 'Never Been Tonight' at #10, 'Pepeha' at #11, and 'Hang On' at #15.

The song was inspired by the birth of lead singer Matiu Walters' daughter. Her arrival led Walters to reframe his relationship with music and the reasons he makes it, and he wanted to create something that could pass on wisdom to her, even though she was too young yet to understand the words. The single was written and recorded at the band's studio in Dunedin as a live session, echoing the way Six60 recorded their earliest music together.

Six60 formed in Dunedin in 2008, taking their name from the address of the flat where the band first came together, 660 Castle Street, which also lent its name to the album that 'Before You Leave' introduces. The band blends reggae, R&B, soul and pop, and built their following through relentless touring and a grassroots fanbase before becoming one of the biggest acts in NZ music history. 'Don't Forget Your Roots', their perennial catalogue staple, was sitting at #3 on the same chart week, in its 285th week on the Aotearoa Top 20.

'Before You Leave' was certified 2× Platinum in New Zealand and produced by Malay, known internationally for his work with Frank Ocean. It reached #3 on the main NZ Top 40 Singles Chart.

How we choose the #1

Each entry represents the song with the most weeks at number one on the New Zealand charts during that calendar month. Where two songs share the same number of weeks, we apply a tiebreaker based on peak chart position, then chart run longevity.

Entries marked as inferred indicate months where primary RIANZ/RMNZ chart data is unavailable. These are reconstructed from contemporary music press, radio playlists, and secondary archival sources, and are clearly labelled.
