Catch A Wave
Te Wehi, Hori Shaw
'Catch a Wave' is a reggae single by Te Wehi and Hori Shaw, released on 19 December 2025 through Precise Digital. It first reached #1 on the Official NZ Top 20 Aotearoa Singles Chart in February 2026, before returning to the top position and holding it through March, all while Te Wehi had three other songs simultaneously charting in the Top 20, a remarkable demonstration of his dominance of the Aotearoa chart at the time. The chart run also told a story within a story: the week 'Catch a Wave' first climbed to #1, it displaced 'Ready to Ride' (the duo's previous collaboration) which dropped from the top spot to #2. Two songs by the same two artists occupying the top two positions on the national chart.
Born and raised in Edgecumbe in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Te Wehi is of Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Whātua and Te Whakatōhea descent. He built his career from his bedroom while running a fencing business, teaching himself production with no plan to chase fame, simply a desire to make music that felt true. His sound blends soul, reggae, country and dub, drawing on artists including Kora, Chris Stapleton, L.A.B and The Teskey Brothers.
Hori Shaw hails from Ōpōtiki on the East Coast. After a life-changing accident left him relearning how to walk, music became his outlet, and he broke through in 2024 with multiple songs reaching the Aotearoa Top 20. 'Ready to Ride', their first collaboration, earned a Single of the Year nomination at the 2026 Aotearoa Music Awards. 'Catch a Wave' was produced by Kings, who also helmed Te Wehi's debut album I'm Home.
How we choose the #1
Each entry represents the song with the most weeks at number one on the New Zealand charts during that calendar month. Where two songs share the same number of weeks, we apply a tiebreaker based on peak chart position, then chart run longevity.
Entries marked as inferred indicate months where primary RIANZ/RMNZ chart data is unavailable. These are reconstructed from contemporary music press, radio playlists, and secondary archival sources, and are clearly labelled.
